THE CANVAS UI

In the hyper connected society of 2030 the commute is a place to disconnect from technology and connect with ourselves and our senses. Therefore the Volvo Sense on-demand service provides the ability for people to focus on being human beings instead of human doings. It provides a safe place where time to be unproductive is at the essence, it is a place to do less, not to do more. In order to disconnect from technology, we explored how screens could be excluded from the interior and instead create an UI that could blend entirely with the interior. Canvas UI provides feedback through the warmth and tactility of the stretch fabric. The user does not have to focus on the visual feedback, but can rely on the tactility of the feedback, that he or she is getting from the fabric itself and from the change in the environment.

Steps in the project

--------------------------------

DESIGN APPROACH:

Ethnographic research, brand analysis, future autonomous vehicle benchmark analysis, journey mapping, scenario building, service design blueprint, interaction blueprint, mockup building, user testing

--------------------------------

WHAT I'VE LEARNED:

Story telling, Mapping animations on 3D objects, Model making - Upholstery, Proximity sensors(Arduino), Filming projections(Frame rate & lighting), Presenting the “working“ concept scenarios on the spot(Wizard of Oz the concept using Processing).

Behind the scene

During the ten week project we wanted to explore the tensions we uncovered between Volvo’s brand values and the future of mobility. Our team of two TD1 and two IxD1 students decided to further explore the tensions of how Volvo is portraying the reality of a daily commute and the tension of future mobility where there is a clash between the concept of premium and shared.

The result is Volvo Sense, a level 5 autonomous driven on-demand service that focuses on the persons well being during the everyday commute. A level 5 automated car, electrically driven that fits two people at a time. The core of the in car experience is that the user controls their sensory input to a much higher degree than currently. There are two modes, Energy and Calm. Depending on what mode is chosen the in car setting changes in a subtle way with the illumination, the scent and subtle audio feedback. In order to provide a premium experience the car dealerships are replaced with experience center where users can experience the commute prior to signing up. To give some control back to the user he/she can choose the social preference when selecting the commute and can adapt his/hers personal space to have the most pleasant commute possible.
