MULTIMODAL GUIDING SYSTEM - UP

Todays technology provides the ability for people to interact with devices at all time, it helps them to be in touch with their loved ones, capture moments and even guides them to a desired destination. But the interaction type makes them gaze down and completely lose touch with their surrounding while doing so. This project explored beyond current interaction types and looked into ways in how people could be guided, while maintaining their ability to focus on the surrounding. The findings are showcased in a form of a multi modal guidance system(called UP), that provides reassurance in all steps of the way without having to look down at the screen. UP guides with visual cues or haptic feedback rather than screen interaction, and provides the ability to recall the guiding information with a simple tap gesture. The information is provided in a way that eliminates the need to stop-to-interact to gain route information and gives people the ability to focus on their surrounding while walking without having to look down at the screen.

HOW IT WORKS

USE CASE SCENARIO

Setting the destination through UP App and be guided to the defined destination with narrational guidance or in silence, while being being aware of the surroundings all along the way.

WORK PROCESS

Steps in the project

--------------------------------

DESIGN APPROACH:

Qualitative interviews, online survey, existing navigation system benchmark analysis & first hand testing, analogous research & first hand immersive experiences, journey mapping, scenario building, interaction blueprint, rapid prototyping(audio, video, haptic,..), wiz-of-oz testing, designing in context, mockup building.

--------------------------------

WHAT I'VE LEARNED:

Story telling, prototyping with audio, in-context prototyping, project management.

--------------------------------

Behind the scene

The human centered design approach led me to have in-depth interviews with different people(visually impaired & blind people, millennials, teenagers, Gen Z,.. and mobility experts), which helped me understand that the biggest add on that technology brings to people when used on the go is guidance.

Immersive experiences such as being guided blindfolded through Tate modern, being guided by a guide dog, and testing existing digital navigation system helped me gain first hand experiences and led to several ideas, that were later designed and tested in context with people. In order to conduct these tests I have used several prototyping techniques with which I have verified, discarded or build on top of by testing with people(wiz-of-oz style) in the context of being guided while walking.

The findings of this design approach(designing in context) were presented in a from of a multimodal guidance system concept, shown in a video format and a prototype people could try out at the UID19 exhibition.
